About Hollie

My art is born from a world that calls to me, a world I do not understand, but I am extremely drawn to it. Every piece I make brings me that much closer to understanding this reality. I cannot define it, all I can do is make these inspirations a reality with my art. Luckily I have found the medium of ceramics and have been able to add to the effects with small metal work and detailed glazing techniques. These techniques have helped me realize my vision. I do not spend too much time critically dissecting the reasoning behind my artistic motives, and that is fine for me, because it liberates me and gives me the freedom to channel these inspirations without feeling trapped inside walls. All I seek in life is profound freedom, and I need that to transcend into my art.
Although I tend to work within the confines of series, I try not to not to be bound by one idea and let things change as they evolve. Once I have an idea I end up running with it and letting one idea flow into the next. I have a deep love for animals and I like to bring industrial elements into the equation to create mythical beings that provoke joy and mystique. I want my work to be fun but I also like to drawn on the darker sensibilities of my audience. I tend to use a lot of small metal work to accentuate my ceramic pieces so that these creatures are caught somewhere between industrial and natural worlds. I feel as technology gets increasingly powerful in our world we are starting to lose grasp of what is natural and what is man-made, and some of my work exemplifies this reality.
